Reaction Work-up and Product Isolation

There is generally a high degree of focus on the reaction or bond –forming stage of a process and often the work-up and product isolation are given little consideration.  However, a very common scenario is that more solvent/process water/plant time/energy will be used in the work-up stage(s) than in the reaction itself.

Since the environmental impact of the primary manufacture of an API is heavily biased towards the amount of organic solvent used, to move towards more sustainable processes, any burden of the downstream processing (DSP) stages also needs to be reduced.

In this module we will look at methodologies and techniques for work-up and product isolation.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module you should:

  • Be able to describe methodologies and technologies that are employed to purify and isolate intermediates and API’s;
  • Be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of telescoping or ‘one pot’ processes;
  • Understand the benefits of designing more efficient work up procedures.
